Well, I've always felt this pull towards mentoring but I have never understood why or if mentoring was even Biblically backed.
God being witty( I think) gave me an opportunity where I HAD to research and know whether or not mentoring was backed and why I had such a passion. This is what I found:) (and I promise I will explain why this passage is so important)

Exodus 18

Message version

"Jethro, priest of Midian and father-in-law to Moses, heard the report of all that God had done for Moses and Israel his people, the news that God had delivered Israel from Egypt. Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, had taken in Zipporah, Moses' wife who had been sent back home, and her two sons. The name of the one was Gershom (Sojourner) for he had said, "I'm a sojourner in a foreign land"; the name of the other was Eliezer (God's-Help) because "The God of my father is my help and saved me from death by Pharaoh."

Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, brought Moses his sons and his wife there in the wilderness where he was camped at the mountain of God. He had sent a message ahead to Moses: "I, your father-in-law, am coming to you with your wife and two sons."

Moses went out to welcome his father-in-law. He bowed to him and kissed him. Each asked the other how things had been with him. Then they went into the tent. Moses told his father-in-law the story of all that God had done to Pharaoh and Egypt in helping Israel, all the trouble they had experienced on the journey, and how God had delivered them.

Jethro was delighted in all the good that God had done for Israel in delivering them from Egyptian oppression. Jethro said, "Blessed be God who has delivered you from the power of Egypt and Pharaoh, who has delivered his people from the oppression of Egypt. Now I know that God is greater than all gods because he's done this to all those who treated Israel arrogantly."

Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, brought a Whole-Burnt-Offering and sacrifices to God. And Aaron, along with all the elders of Israel, came and ate the meal with Moses' father-in-law in the presence of God.

The next day Moses took his place to judge the people. People were standing before him all day long, from morning to night. When Moses' father-in-law saw all that he was doing for the people, he said, "What's going on here? Why are you doing all this, and all by yourself, letting everybody line up before you from morning to night?"

Moses said to his father-in-law, "Because the people come to me with questions about God. When something comes up, they come to me. I judge between a man and his neighbor and teach them God's laws and instructions."

Moses' father-in-law said, "This is no way to go about it. You'll burn out, and the people right along with you. This is way too much for you—you can't do this alone. Now listen to me. Let me tell you how to do this so that God will be in this with you. Be there for the people before God, but let the matters of concern be presented to God. Your job is to teach them the rules and instructions, to show them how to live, what to do. And then you need to keep a sharp eye out for competent men—men who fear God, men of integrity, men who are incorruptible—and appoint them as leaders over groups organized by the thousand, by the hundred, by fifty, and by ten. They'll be responsible for the everyday work of judging among the people. They'll bring the hard cases to you, but in the routine cases they'll be the judges. They will share your load and that will make it easier for you. If you handle the work this way, you'll have the strength to carry out whatever God commands you, and the people in their settings will flourish also."

Moses listened to the counsel of his father-in-law and did everything he said. Moses picked competent men from all Israel and set them as leaders over the people who were organized by the thousand, by the hundred, by fifty, and by ten. They took over the everyday work of judging among the people. They brought the hard cases to Moses, but in the routine cases they were the judges. Then Moses said good-bye to his father-in-law who went home to his own country."

SIDE NOTE:When I was searching the Bible for mentoring I kept coming across the word "fellowship." I'm not going to lie... I kind of snarled my nose at that word...It's just so....churchy... so after an attitude adjustment I decided to dig a little deeper.:)

Fellowship- to invest in, to share or to partner.

The Greek translation is: Koinonia (coy-no-knee-ah)- Communication by intimate participation. In the Bible this word is translated as Fellowship(12 times), Sharing(3 times), Participation( 2 times), and Contribution (2 times).

Koinonos(coy-no-nos)- a companion.

It is depicted as our relationship with the Holy Spirit.

Koinonos creates a bond that allows us to share joy and pain, united because of our common experiences, interests, and goals. Which then creates Koinonia.

Exodus 18 is such a perfect depiction of Koinonos leading into Koinonia. Moses' and Jethro's faith and companionship with God allowed them in return to share a special bond. The type of mentoring that I see Jethro and Moses demonstrating is "mutual mentoring." Mutual Mentoring is two who stand together respecting and benefiting from the uniqueness that each person brings to the relationship.
There is something so special to me when both parties(older and younger) are willing to allow the other to pour into them. God is so creative that He designed each of us with different thought processes and life experiences to benefit each other and in all things glorify Him.

Romans 12:4-6

The Message Version

"In this way we are like the various parts of a human body. Each part gets its meaning from the body as a whole, not the other way around. The body we're talking about is Christ's body of chosen people. Each of us finds our meaning and function as a part of his body. But as a chopped-off finger or cut-off toe we wouldn't amount to much, would we? So since we find ourselves fashioned into all these excellently formed and marvelously functioning parts in Christ's body, let's just go ahead and be what we were made to be, without enviously or pridefully comparing ourselves with each other, or trying to be something we aren't."

Titus 2:7-8, 11-15

The Message Version

"In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us...For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.
These, then, are the things you should teach. In that conversation he challenged me to make sure I was developing my craft with my personal day to day worship. I had been doing my time at home in the Word, but I had never thought about specifically setting aside time to Worship alone. So I did. I have started making to time worship along with my favorite tunes. Let me tell you, I feel like I have been picked up out of a funk.

I challenge you two things:

1.) make sure you have someone holding you accountable and encouraging you to grow beyond your capacity in your life. its truly necessary.
2.) So, I will try to relay them the best I can...and attempt to make sense;)

"Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless. With God we will gain the victory, and He will trample down our enemies."-psalm 60:11-12

"Remove the dross from the silver, and out comes material for the Silversmith; Remove the wicked from the king's presence and his throne will be established through righteousness."-proverbs 25:4

this next verse I was thinking..."Lord why in the world does this stand out to me"...and then I all of the sudden was brought back to reality and smacked in the face.

"This is what the Lord says to me: 'Go, post a lookout and have him report what he sees. When he sees chariots with teams of horses, riders on donkeys or riders on camels, let him be fully alert, fully alert."-Isaiah 21:6-7

After the reality check I began to see how these fit together. I want a "victory" in my life. I want to look back and see that I was a vessel God used. That I was open and ready for Him. I want Him to say "well done my good and faithful servant." How can I be open and ready for God...when I am covered in "dross?" How can I be fully "alert" when I can't see through the "dross" that I am covered in? How can I expect a "victory" when I am not even able to see what is right in front of me?

All of these thoughts brought me back to the other day, when I completely ran a red light. I wasn't paying attention. I wasn't alert. I was deep in thought and just ran right through it. Thank God no one was at the intersection. It wasn't until I was passing underneath the light that I realized it was red...How many times have I done that with God.

Looking back I can see tons of these times where if I had been able to "see" and if I had been "alert" I would have avoided running straight through the warning signs. And then I wonder...Where would I be if I had been alert? If I had stopped, listened and chosen the right direction, what would my life look like now? I can't "fix" the past but I sure can start being alert in the present.

What are some things that bog you down and keep you from seeing the vision God has for your life? What keeps you from being alert?

I'm a Slacker...BUT She Isn't!!=)

Soooo my mom Melissa Carlson took the time to write more about how I came to know my calling and what led me to write and record my EP Radiant.

As she always does, she did a fantastic job.

love you mom.

check it out!

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; God came into those retreat centers and "filled our thirsty hearts..." I am so thankful to be able to worship with you, ladies! You filled my heart with joy as I listened to your hearts crying out to the Lord through song. I know your voices were a joyful noise unto the Lord. Bless you!
Reading your prayer requests broke my heart. A lot of you have health, financial, marital problems. I know, from my own experience, how it can seem that God is so far away. That the most important things are being stripped from your life. Its hard. However, as I shared with the Denver ladies, if we never went through the desert, or the fire, or the battle...the harvest would not be as encouraging nor would we see God's presence as strongly. It is in those hard times that the Lord draws us near to Him and comforts us. I will continue to lift you ALL up. You will forever be in my heart. My prayer for you is that in these hard times you surround yourself with the friendships you established over the weekend and you keep your attention on the Lord and HIS good plan=) Also remember, the God we serve "created the Earth and everything in it. The world and all it's people..." He is everywhere and in control of everything. I think HE can handle our problems;) if we choose to let Him. I am filled with awe as I typed those last few sentences. I am filled with wonder at the thought of how strong and creative He is. We are so creatively and affectionately designed.

Keep in touch ladies! The news said that Nashville recieved a three months amount of rain in one and a half days. There are a lot of homeless, stranded, hurting people. As you talk to the Lord please remember them. I am so thankful for the man who I call "daddy." On March 31, 2000 my daddy, Lyle, adopted me and I got to share his last name. I am so thankful for this man and the love and patience he has shown me. I do not know what I would do with out him.
Let me back up and say that I accepted Christ into my heart when I was nine. However, my spiritual growth did not REALLY begin until I thought my daddy, Lyle, was going to be taken from me. In December of 2002 Lyle was diagnosed with stage 4 malignant melanomia. To make a long story short, we did not know whether or not the cancer had spread to his lymph nodes until he came out of surgery. By the grace of God they were able to remove all the cancerous cells and daddy is cancer free and out of remission. In those months I learned to truly depend upon the Lord and I started a growing relationship with the Lord.
After I started growing in Christ my love for music became a love for worship.I have sang at church for as long as I can remember, but when I was in 7th grade I started helping lead worship and singing the back ground vocals for our youth group. When I was 13 I flew out to L.A. to tour with the Young Continentals for six weeks. That tour helped to show me who I AM as a vocalist and encouraged me to step out and LEAD (instead of hiding behind a microphone). When I came home I felt like a different person and I realize now it was God molding me into a worship leader.

Everchanging Seasons: PART 1

So,

I was asked to blog my story of, "how my passion for Worship/music became an everyday reality".

At first I thought, "really? why would anyone want to read that?" But then I came to realize what a word of encouragement God has blessed me with as I step into this new season. I started off writing, or in my case its more like talking through my fingers, with a "pep in my step" that faded into an icky gut feeling.

You know, that feeling you get when God is saying..."uh uh. That's not all of it." And of course being the woman focused on doing the Lord's will, I kept on writing about my music career.

I wrote the WHOLE blog post. Even went so far as to e-mail it to my mother, who you will often see / hear me refer to as "momager" (you will later read why) to edit and check it . Then when I got her feed back, with some good hooks to keep you coming back to read more;)

I realized what I didn't want to let myself listen to.

I was leaving out SO much of my heart and story and the amazing work that God has done in my life by simply telling of ONLY my music testimony...I promise i heard "duh duh duuuuhhh" in the background. "God I really have to tell my WHOLE testimony...All of it?...REALLY?".....

...Please pause for a moment of pouting...

So here I am... Blogging about it. Blogging about ALL of it.

Let me start off by saying that my mother aka "momager" is my best friend and my hero.

Her testimony of mistakes and healing serve as an inspiration and encouragement to everyone.

I love you mom and I am FOREVER grateful for you.

My mother conceived me when she was 19. She married my father and boy was that a "season" for her. He cheated on her while she was pregnant, and if that was not enough, was a habitual liar. They went to counseling to try to make it work. He lied so much he evidently couldn't keep all his lies in check and the counselor caught on.

We only lived with my dad until I was four weeks old but here is how those four weeks went:

I have REALLY bad acid reflux, which back in the day, they called colic. So I screamed from dinner time until mom could get me to sleep until I was probably a year old. My dad got to the point that if he got mad at mom he would take it out on me by doing something to wake me up and upon waking up I'd scream for hours...again. After he started doing that to me and fearful that he would only get worse, she left and divorced him.

His parents and sister wanted to be a part of my life so my mom allowed them to pick me up for the day to spend time with me. She even let them pick me up on Christmas morning. They decided, a day wasn't long enough and took my mom to court. His parents lied and said that "she was keeping me from them" and the court ruled in their favor. They got me one entire weekend a month.

Her reasons for me not staying over night were:

one- I was an infant(hello?)

two- I cried if I wasn't at home at night.

So when I came home from their house, I came home with a rash from crying so much.

When she left him we moved in with my mom's parents and lived with them until I was two or three( which was JUST enough time to turn me into a heathen;)) In that time, mom finished her degree, got a teaching job, and moved us to that town(which is like 45minutes from all of her family).

For seven years it was just me and mom.

(Of course I saw my grandparents all the time and I was still going to my dad's parents house once a month) The point I am trying to make is that mom was 24, owned her own house, had a steady career, AND was a single mother...I cannot see myself there in four years. CRAZY.

I'm not sure how old I was when my mom met and started dating Lyle. When they got engaged I asked him if I could call him daddy. They got married when I was almost seven.

I was in line to go to the bath room in 3rd grade when daddy walked in to pick me up to take me to the hospital. THAT was a sight. I ran out of line and JUMPED into his arms and did one of those "climb up the person in front of you back flips". Poor guy, I was just SO excited to be a big sister. Cole is my polar opposite and it is hysterical=)

I accepted Christ into my heart when I was nine but it wasn't for a little bit that I truly took off running into His arms.

In March of 2000 my world changed, and my life is a true testimony of "what people can do for bad God can turn to good"....

First Imagine Me weekend=)

All I can say is "WOOOOW."
God showed up ALLLL over that place.

It's funny, I came to the Cove to minister to the Meck women through worship, and THEY, along with the COVE EMPLOYEES, ministered to Pat, myself and the rest of the team in an AMAZING way.

Thank you ladies ( and the gentlemen at the Cove) for being such lights for Christ.

I am SO THANKFUL to have been blessed to worship and grow along side you!!!

Can't wait to see and hear all that Christ is going to do in your present and future!!!

woo hoo!

Going to go crash in my parents guest bed now. When she saw King David leaping and dancing beforeGod, her heart filled with scorn...David returned home to bless his family. Michal, Saul's daughter, came out to greet him: "How wonderfully the king has distinguished himself today—exposing himself to the eyes of the servants' maids like some burlesque street dancer!" David replied to Michal, "In God's presence I'll dance all I want! And as far as I'm concerned...I'll gladly look like a fool...but among these maids you're so worried about, I'll be honored no end."

This passage screams out to me. I want to praise the Lord with reckless abandon, worshipping FULL OUT. David could have cared less what he looked like, he just gave his full attention to the Lord. How many times do I half way praise God? How many times am I singing and in the back of my mind thinking about the previous week, my schedule after church and for the following week, or the adorably awesome dress that girl is wearing! I wish I could say...never! However, that would be a big fat lie. My prayer this week has been to worship God full out, whether I am at a worship service or changing the diapers of the little girls i nanny. If my heart is "recklessly abandoned" before Him, then anything I do that day is worship to my Lord.

On a side note, Ive been reading Proverbs this week=)

Chapter 4 is my devo for tonight, cant wait!

((hugs))

"Makes you wanna smack ya momma"

I heard that phrase about a year or so ago and it just cracks me up. This morning(all week truthfully) God has just opened HUGE doors. Dont you love when He just provides? When you feel like the "wilderness"( as Priscilla Shirer calls it) or that waiting, in between period will never end, and God says here ya go! and plops opportunities to serve Him right in your lap!
God, for the past few years has really been growing me. It is just incredible to see where He has brought me from. I have felt the call to lead worship since i was 12 its incredible to watch Him open those doors for me.
My heart goes out to those in the "wilderness" ready to go where God leads, hearts about to burst with passion for Him dying to get out. My experience has been, and still is, that i need to prepare myself for WHATEVER He has got prepared for me.
So as of now I am focusing on growing in Him by staying in the Word and surrounding myself with godly counsel to hold me accountable.
God is so good and has such AMAZING plans for those who seek after His name.

These verses have been on my heart here lately...

"To all who mourn in Israel,
He will give a crown of beauty for ashes,
a joyous blessing instead of mourning,
festive praise instead of despair.
In their righteousness they will be like mighty oaks
that the LORD has planted for His glory."
~Isaiah 61:3

This next verse I pray before i lead worship. It helps me to only focus on Him, and not everything crazy that happened that week.

"Who may worship in your sanctuary, Lord?
Who may enter your presence on your holy hill?
Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right,
speaking the truth from sincere hearts.
Those who refuse to gossip
or harm their neighbors
or speak evil of their friends.
Those who despise flagrant sinners,
and honor the faithful followers of the Lord,
and keep their promises even when it hurts.
Those who lend money without charging interest,
and who cannot be bribed to lie about the innocent.
Such people will stand firm forever."
~Psalm 15

=) Love you
Kate

hello friends:)

so in praying and studying, i realzied how i had forgotten where my security and joy is found. over time i had let it slip away and had placed my hope in other things, simple things. i remembered reading "No Other Gods" by Kelly Minter and she mentions a few that i had not really taken the time to process or think about,

"...The problem is, when we come across these passages( talking about idols), we often think of statues, sculpted idols, and foreign countries. the entire concept is relegated to far-off peoples in far-off lands. We don't think of the litany of modern-day gods we depend on daily for comfort, relief, protection, happiness life. Or, if we do think of these things, we tend to think of the ones that are on the universally "bad" list: sexual sins, pornography, alcoholism, and drug addiction. but what about the things that are inherently good? things like friends, spouses, material possesions? things that have only become bad because we have made them the "ultimate" things in our lives. in some ways, this feels far more common. John Calvin put it similarly:" the evil in our desire typically does not lie in what we want, but that we want it too much."

So, along with the song, God revealed to me what i was lacking was him. that the things that i tried to fill up with and bring me life and joy could never and would never do that. i would never be filled with life and joy because of my relationships with others, or from leading worship, or any other thing that i placed on that pedestal... None of them have life giving abilities. my peace, hope, love, joy, LIFE comes from my Heavenly Father alone. In Him i may rest. In Him i will not be silent=)
so when you read the lyrics to this song, think about the joy Christ wants to give, and who he has made you. He is so good and deserves to be our number one. so pray for me, that i stay strong in this mindset and keep the right God first.

Oh Taste and See
Hillsong United

O taste and see
That the Lord is good
O taste and see
That the Lord is good
He is good to me

You've turned my mourning
Into dancing
Put off my rags and clothed me with gladness
And I will arise and I will praise you
I'll sing and not be silent

O Lord, My God
I will give thanks to you forever
O Lord, My God
I will give thanks to you

And I'll live only for you
And I'll lift these hands up to you
And I'll dance before you
I will shout it, I will shout it to you

2010 Schedule

Kate Carlson is scheduled to lead worship at the following events:
*Schedule updated 04/16/10.

<span style="font-weight: bold; Kate learned through the experience that sometimes it takes a tragedy to become broken enough to fall into the arms of God. At this young age of 12, God placed a passion and desire to lead worship in Kate’s heart. She recognized the gift that she had been given and began to use it to glorify God and touch the lives of others in weekly Youth services, and occasionally in main worship services, as well as events. When she was thirteen she traveled to the West Coast to share the gospel through music and choreography with the Young Continentals. Two years ago, Kate was a featured vocalist on Mike Cowart's recording, Even If I Fall.

Today Kate continues to lead worship at various churches in the Nashville area, Youth conferences, and Women’s events and retreats across the Unites States. She is currently partnering with Pat Layton, speaker and author of Surrendering the Secret and Imagine Me Set Free, in leading worship for the Imagine Me Set Free Conferences in 2010. Kate is inspired by the surrendered heart of David in 2 Samuel 6, and desires to create a worship environment characteristic of Psalm 100.
